A Piece of My Mind ~

I came to know about 'Save the Orangutans' campaign through my mom.  She told me that WWF together with BOH Tea Plantation Sdn Bhd is organizing this campaign.  I was quite reluctant to join this campaign as I never participated in this kind of campaign before.  Besides that , to start this campaign I will need funds to do this.

Then , the 'Starfish Story' came to my mind.  I remember a quote from the story , "But sir, it matters to this one."  I told myself , I might be able to help through this campaign.  I might not save an orangutan in the forest like the little boy , but I wanted to do something to change the world. Alright , I won't be able to change the world , but if I can create awareness in one single person today , another one tomorrow , in a year , I will be able to change 365 person's mindset on saving orangutans.  This is what I think and I work towards this goal. That is how I started preparing and going all out for it.

To me , this is not only a campaign to help save the orangutans. It is also a campaign to create love and responsibility among the people around me.  At first , before setting out my first step , I was very nervous and worried that my campaign won't work. But it turn out quite good. I guess I was too worried after all.  It was quite a satisfying campaign in the beginning , people were penning down their signatures to show support , friends were wearing the ribbons we gave out. All of sudden my world come tumbling down when a fellow student refuse to sign on my 'signature poster'. He simply turned and walked away as if I'm not there.  I feel like running after him , grab him and give him a good hard shake and ask him , "How could you be so heartless and ignore such a meaningful campaign ?"  But I didn't.  I just stood there speechless and let him walk pass.

There is another thing that makes me so proud of myself during this campaign. The idea of getting people to support  by putting up a ribbon to create awareness in our 'Save the Orangutans' campaign.  As our ribbon was created based on two meaningful colors , green and purple , which symbolized LIFE & HOPE.  I guess people just love these two words. We made about 100 ribbons for our school , SMK Seksyen 10 , Kota Damansara , and we were able to get 100 students to put in on in just 10 minutes !!!! What an effort ! A job well done !!

Besides the signature drive and the ribbon distribution , we went to the Children's World Montessori to promote this campaign.  We reached there early in the morning before the children reached the school.  We approached the parents and asked them to support our campaign by penning down their signatures and by wearing the ribbons we gave out.  I'm really glad that most of the parents were very supportive. They wore the Life & Hope ribbons in front of us to show their support.  It was even more satisfying when all the children there showed their interest in the activities.  The happy looks and smiles on the children face really touched me.  They even thanked me for having such a nice activities for them.

I will still continue this campaign throughout the school holidays. Even though I won't be able to run the campaign in school , I am thinking of visiting some public places and give out our blog address card to get some comments and ideas posted.

I know our blog do not have a lot of links and social networking websites to promote this campaign , but I believe the personal touch and contact is the most important aspect in showing that we care and wanted to do something to help the orangutans and help save our future as well. My mom always tell me , the most important thing in developing a person, is to give him / her your time and love.
